Excel reporting

Finatical

The bank needed eight entities to read as one

QuickBooks Online users describe losing hours each month to exporting data and rebuilding the same Excel reports. Finatical's Flash Reports brings the live figures into Excel, where advisers, and now Claude, do the analysis.

The story

A call from the bank

In March 2026 an adviser posted a review on the QuickBooks App Store about a call from a bank. One of the adviser's clients owned eight entities, each with its books in a separate QuickBooks Online account. For a loan, the bank wanted a consolidated profit and loss statement and balance sheet for the group, and asked the adviser to prepare them. Doing the work in-house, the bank explained, would tie up its own staff for too long. The adviser turned to Flash Reports, the Excel add-in from Finatical Software. Within minutes the add-in had pulled the figures from all eight accounts and produced the combined statements the lender needed.

Where the reports stopped

QuickBooks Online keeps the ledger, but its reports are hard to bend. Finatical's homepage lists the complaints: unfamiliar layouts, little room for your own math, custom reports that go stale and sources that will not combine. App Store reviewers describe the cost. One says the add-in now saves four to six hours a month that used to go into exporting spreadsheets, drawing charts and rebuilding dashboards for a management team. Another had tracked grants and programs by hand. A third, moving from QuickBooks Desktop, lost the Budget Performance report and feared having to go back. All three say Flash Reports closed the gap.

Live numbers in the grid

Flash Reports runs inside Excel on Windows and Mac. A user connects one QuickBooks Online company or many, imports a standard report or template, and adds budget, prior-period and variance columns. Every figure is a formula tied to a specific company file, not a pasted value. A refresh pulls current balances, recalculates whatever depends on them and leaves the formatting alone. In an August 2026 company demo, a connected company file becomes a finished profit and loss with budget variances in about two minutes. The Reporting Pack, released in March 2026, wraps a branded cover, an index and commentary pages around any number of reports and reruns them for a new date in one pass.

Claude reads the workbook

In March 2026 Finatical announced that Flash Reports works with Claude in Excel, Anthropic's add-in that sits in a sidebar beside the report and answers questions about the numbers. By September 2026 Finatical had published a skill that teaches Claude the add-in's formulas and conventions, with a video guide to loading it. One part handles a month-end snag. When an account is opened in QuickBooks after a report was built, a control total can fall out of balance. Claude has the user run Drilldown on the flagged total, finds the account missing from the report, inserts its row with the same formula as its neighbors and confirms the subtotal picks it up. The skill's fix is always the missing row, never an edited total.

Built for advisers

In October 2025 Finatical said its growth was coming from people who report on other people's books: fractional CFO firms, accounting firms and QuickBooks consultants. Reviewers include a nonprofit director of finance and a construction accountant tracking work in progress. A nonprofit CFO uses it for all of her clients. She changes a single date and her finance committee, leadership and board reports update to match; in an August 2024 review she put her own saving at ten hours or more per client each report cycle. A finance team running several entities, each split into more than ten locations, stopped dreading consolidation. As of October 2026 the add-in held 46 ratings on the QuickBooks App Store, all five stars.
